What is family therapy?

Family therapy is a conversation between me as a psychologist and you as a family, where we focus on improving communication and relationships between family members. Therapy helps you deal with conflict, stress and life changes in a healthy and constructive way. I offer family therapy for all kinds of family relationships – adult siblings, adult children and their parents, parents of young children (only the parents take part in the sessions), whole families or other constellations where the relationship needs support.

When should a family consider family therapy?

If there is a lot of conflict or misunderstanding in the family, or if a family member is showing signs of not doing well, it can be a good idea to seek professional help. In family therapy, I work with you as a family or with individual members to identify and resolve the problems that affect the family's dynamics. Among other things, therapy can help you to:

✅ Improve communication between family members
✅ Resolve conflicts and misunderstandings
✅ Strengthen relationships and cooperation
✅ Cope with stressful situations such as divorce, grief or illness
✅ Understand and work through old patterns that cause problems

What happens in a family therapy session?

In my sessions, I create a safe and confidential space where each family member has the chance to express their feelings and perspectives. I act as a kind of translator, helping you put experiences and needs into words – in a way that is open and vulnerable, but constructive.

I work with an emotion-focused approach, where we look at how old emotional patterns affect your current relationships. At the same time, you learn to read and communicate your feelings in more helpful ways. Together we explore which values you want to build your relationships on going forward, so you get concrete tools to work better together.

How are children involved in family therapy?

In my family therapy sessions, I do not involve the children directly. I know that parents make up the environment children live in and are shaped by – and that changes in the parents' behaviour will have a big influence on the children over time.

That is why I give you as parents the chance to sit undisturbed and talk about the reflections and tools you need to resolve or ease your challenges.
